Flagrant Angel - Band

Back in June I had the pleasure of working with Flagrant Angel in the studio for group and individual promo shots for the band. If you have not heard these guys play then keep an eye open for upcoming gigs, well worth attending.

We spent a few hours working through a few different sets to provide the band with a range of images to promote themselves for upcoming gigs and band activities on social media.

First up was the individual portraits on a clean and simple grey seamless, this way it's about the person and not the background.

After the individual portraits we moved on to the group shots. I wanted to give both the band and myself options for promo material from the group shots, which is why you will see negative space on some images which can have text and logos place over or be used for a poster to advertise an upcoming gig.

We started on the white seamless set then moved to a simple one light set-up for something more dramatic.

Head Shots & Portraits for a CV

Today we can have many reasons for requiring a head shot or portrait and one of those is for your CV.

The images below are from a recent session with Tori and the brief was for head shots as well as full length portraits for her CV. Tori was looking for new work in the Airline industry as a Flight Attendant and that industry requires images to go along with your CV.

For these images I kept the background clean and simple, that way the images are about the person which is what the CV is selling. No need for a portrait in front of a plane.

We shot a few different looks during the session, changing up the outfit and hair as well as the background to give Tori options.

It’s common for people to be nervous about having their headshot or portrait taken, especially if it’s not a regular experience for them. To counter this I will have some music on in the studio and spend the first 10-15 minutes talking, once we start shooting there is no pressure to get great shots from the gate (see what I did) as both the subject and myself need to warm up and ease in to the shoot.

It helps to keep the set nice and simple to help move things along as well.

Tori did a great job and I wish her all the best in her job hunt.

Client Work: Corporate office at work and Head-Shots for Tecmark in Manchester

Before I travelled to the United States I shot head shots and office at work images for Tecmark in Manchester. Tecmark is a Multi-Screen marketing company who specialise in creating digital assets and driving traffic to them.

The job was to photograph head shots of the key members of staff including the Managing Director and photograph images of the office at work.

Before we take a look at the images below I would like to say thank you to everyone at Tecmark for booking me and for an enjoyable mornings work was great to meet everyone.

For the photographers that read my blog the set-up for the head shots was pretty simple but I had to change the original plan. I was going to use the Westcott 60" shoot through umbrella as its a larger and softer source but the ceiling height had other ideas, the light would of been too low so I switched to a smaller modifier the Westcott 43" convertible in shoot through configuration so I could get the key light higher to drop a shadow under the chin.

The background (a white wall) was lit with another speedlite on a lower stand behind the subjects.

You can see in the set-up shot with the 2 lights and the white wall. The blinds were closed to cut the natural light coming through the windows giving an all flash exposure with out having to drive the small flash too hard. Also you can see the set-up was metered and tested before the subjects walk in but a light meter is not a 100% guarantee, sometimes you need to adjust on the fly for lighter clothes or skin tones.

Whilst on site I also photographed images of the office at work and the work environment.

Studio Ink Well (Studio at Work)

The second day working for Studio Ink Well was spent recording the Studio at work and detail shots. Huge thanks go out to the studio and a few of its clients for the open access.

A detail shot of the tattoo chair. I try to always think of options for use of images, adding negative space could allow for the Studios own graphic layout or text to be added later.

The alternative shot minus the negative space. Both of these were lit with flash so I had full control of the scene.

Of course along with the chair you have the Tattoo gun, quite interesting tools and very different than my own.

Inks that the artist David Baker uses.

It's extremely interesting watching another artist at work, not just the skills and work on show but also the interaction with client/subjects and how they build the idea to a finished product. I always find in interesting to watch and listen to and if you read/see between the lines you can learn allot.

Shot allot initially with the available light, it shows the ambiance of the Studio and it also lets me work quickly and less intrusively at first.. instead of breaking out stands and lights from the start. Also as you will see in some of the images above/below it can make for quite interesting and dramatic light.

To give a different look I also lit some images to remove the ambient/available light all together which makes for a more dramatic image when grid spots are used.

This next set is from the second client the Studio had in on the day.

Noticed the reflection in the mirror and shot wide to include it. One of my favorites from the day.

Finished off with a close up detail shot of the Tattoo, they are not complete yet as each stage needs time to heal. I will be photographing the finished Tattoo's once they have fully healed so I can provide prints to the Studios customers.. its the least I can do as they were great to meet and very kind to let me photograph them.
